The origins of Klein Zwitserland can be traced to an era when the area was devoted to oak wood production. This wood was mainly used for its valuable bark which is essential to leather tanning. Amersfoortse Berg covered in a dry, nutrient-poor coppice of oak served as this until the early 20th Century when a portion of the Bosgebied Berg area was designated for sand, gravel, and other mineral extraction. In the 1930s during a period when work provision initiatives were implemented, the area was transformed into a recreation area that is perfect for leisurely walks in nature.

The Galgenberg is located in Klein Zwitserland and stands proudly at 44 meters above NAP as Amersfoort's highest point. The infamous gallows, which stood on this height centuries ago, is no longer there, but traces of it still remain. Its 18-meter diameter summit rises 3 meters above the surrounding area. The first city account from 1550 mentions it. In 1770 the gallows was removed, and the Galgenberg became a peaceful spot. A pond, built in 1998 to allow toads, salamanders, and other animals to migrate safely, was then constructed.

Children can build huts in the serenity of the forest and engage in creative play. If you want to explore further the area, there is a 3.5 kilometer route with green-rimmed signs that allows you to see the Belgenmonument and an ancient burial mound.
