The Vlaams Tram en Autobusmuseum, a tram museum, displays trams and busses, both old and new. The museum, which is situated in Berchem at the former Groenenhoek Depot, was founded on De Lijn's initiative and with their support. The museum contains trams and buses of the NMVB as well as other Flemish tram- and bus-companies.
The museum is housed in the historic Groenenhoek Depot Building at Diksmuidelaan, 42, 2600 Berchem - Antwerp. The building was built in 1912, and it was declared a protected monument by the Dutch government on March 19, 1996. De Lijn used the Groenenhoek Depot until December 15, 1997. The museum was reopened June 15, 2019 after renovations in the building.
From mid-April until mid-October the museum is open Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays between 1:00 pm and 4:30 pm, taking into consideration Covid-19. The museum is accessible to people with disabilities. However, the grooved rail tracks and inclined curves need extra attention.
The collection is dedicated to the history and development of public transportation in Belgium, in particular Flanders. The oldest vehicle is the B2227 packing car from the Buurtspoorwegen, built in 1899. The first Antwerp Electric Tram (built in 1900), the open tram from Ghent (1908), the steam tram locomotive of 1915, and the last remaining gyrobus are also notable vehicles. The museum has 75 trams and busses in total. The museum also has a large collection of accessories and uniforms.
The museum has its own archives. After the breakup of Buurtspoorwegen, the Flemish archive (including Walloon Brabant), was transferred to "De Lijn". This tramway archive has been preserved in the museum thanks to the personal involvement of Eric Keutgens. Later, the West Flanders archive was taken over by the West Flanders archive service in Bruges. The archive contains, among others, original project applications and capital formation. It also includes works of art and stations and depots. Researchers can consult these documents by appointment.
