The Dusseldorfer Yachtclub is a prominent figure in the history and development of sailing in North Rhine-Westphalia. The DYC was founded in 1908 and is the second-oldest sailing club in this region. The club is located in Dusseldorf and has a long history. It has also played an important role in the promotion of sailing.
DYC began as the Dusseldorfer Motorboot-Club Ahoi with 45 members. The club was instrumental in the building of a yacht harbour north of Golzheimer Insel. It opened its doors in 1909, with the "Peter", a residential ship and four berths. The club was very active in sporting competitions. In 1911, the club organized the first open Rhine regatta from Benrath all the way to Dusseldorf. The DYC thrived over the years and in 1935 it merged into the "Rheinischer Yachtclub".
DYC has a volunteer board that is responsible for organising regattas and competitions. They also organize youth training. The club has approximately 500 members including a large percentage of junior and youth members. It is dedicated to encouraging a love for sailing in all age groups.
DYC has had great success with various boat classes including Starboats, Flying Dutchmans, Lasers, 470ers, and 505ers, winning German Championships. Honorary member Willi Ilbruck, and his Pinta ship, achieved outstanding success in offshore sailing. Willi Illbruck and his son Michael took part in the Volvo Round the World Race (formerly Whitbread), which they won in 2002 on the Illbruck. Gerd Muller, Klaus Hympendahl and other accomplished sailors are also members of the club. They have circumnavigated globes and won numerous awards.
The DYC is committed to nurturing the talents of young sailors and offers training for Juniors in Optimist, 420ers, Lasers, and H-Boots. The club's Lowensee, in Willich, is the training area for young sailors. The DYC received the prestigious "Green Ribbon" for its outstanding youth work in 1995.
The DYC has a motorboat division which actively takes part in competitions. The club has hosted three "Pavillon d'Or" competitions, a long distance motor yacht race recognized by U.I.M.
