The last medieval city gate, the Ratinger Tor in Dusseldorf is still standing. The current structure, while not the original medieval city gate, is a customs entrance built in neoclassical fashion between 1811-1815. Construction of the new gate became necessary after the Treaty of Luneville stipulated the demolition of fortifications. This relocation allowed for the extension of Ratinger Street and the creation of a boulevard known today as Heinrich-Heine-Allee.
The Ratinger Tor's two almost square buildings are built in a neoclassical design, reminiscent ancient temple structures. Three sides of each building are decorated with Doric columns, while the metopes have laurel wreaths in gold. The tympanum, however, remains unadorned. The gate was designed by Adolph von Vagdes, a Schinkel disciple, and it served as the model for the Neue Wache, Berlin. In 1983, Ratinger Tor, a castle, manor house, fortification, or palace, was designated a monument because of its architectural and historic significance.
Situated east of the medieval city center, Ratinger Tor is located at the intersection of Heinrich-Heine-Allee and Maximilian-Weyhe-Allee, connecting the old town with Schloss Jagerhof through the Hofgarten. The two gatehouses have addresses at Maximilian-Weyhe-Allee 1 and 2, marking the boundary between the Pempelfort and Stadtmitte districts.
