The Wilhelminaplein neighborhood is located in the center of Eindhoven and is known for its vibrant nightlife. The area was named after Queen Wilhelmina in 1904 to honor her visit with Prince Hendrik. It is home to brown cafes, outdoor terraces and live music venues. The jazz and blues café Wilhelmina is one of the most popular establishments in the square. It is directly connected to the Prins Hendrik Cafe. Oranje Boven is located above these cafes. Many other cafes and restaurants are available on the square, including Broodje Smits, a popular lunch place.
Architecture surrounding the rectangular Wilhelminaplein consists primarily of two- and three-story structures dating from the 1900s-1920s. The oldest buildings on this square date back to 1905/1906. Eleven buildings in the square are listed as Eindhoven Municipal Monuments, including Wilhelminaplein 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 14, 14A, 19, and 25. The square is also home to the bronze sculpture, "Gekooide Vrijheid", by Oirschotse Artist Hans van Eerd. It was commissioned by Eindhoven Municipality in honor of Amnesty International’s 25th Anniversary.
