The history of Sankt Katharinen-Krankenhaus dates back to its opening on May 30, 1960. The Katharinenschwestern, or Sisters of St. Catherine, arrived in Bad Rothenfelde after being forced to leave their home in Ermland during World War II. The Sisters of St. Catherine initially worked in an old military hospital, but eventually found their way through Alois Eckert, the parish priest from the area, to Frankfurt's city treasurer, Stadtkammerer. The groundbreaking ceremony for the new hospital took place on August 21, 1958, after an agreement was reached to build it. On May 30, 1960 the hospital opened and was relocated from the Waldkrankenhaus Bad Rothenfelde. It brought along 120 staff, 80 nuns, and all of the necessary equipment. The hospital had 454 beds at its founding and departments for internal medicine and surgery. It also included gynecology and neurology. Alois Giefer, Hermann Mackler and other renowned Frankfurt architects collaborated on the new building.
Over the years, Sankt Katharinen-Krankenhaus has seen significant developments. In 1970, a multidisciplinary intensive care unit and a central emergency room were established. In 1993 the hospital was incorporated into the Gesellschaft der Katharinenschwestern. In 1999, the gynecology section was closed to make way for the main urology department. In 2002, extensive renovations were carried out, including the construction of an operating theatre, intensive care unit and emergency department. A new building, "Haus L", was constructed to house two isolation wards.
Today, Sankt Katharinen-Krankenhaus accommodates around 350 beds and encompasses various main departments. The hospital has a wide range of departments, including anesthesiology, operative intensive care, orthopedics, trauma surgery, visceral surgeries, a neurological clinic, geriatrics and cardiology. It also works closely with a cardiology practice in-house called "CardioVasculares Center", gastroenterology, neuroscience, radiology and its own CT and MRI machine. The hospital is one of three facilities in Frankfurt that are designated as tuberculosis centers for the admission and treatment tuberculosis sufferers.
