This park, situated between the Scheldt and Leie rivers, was established in 1875. Redesigned again for World Exposition of 1913, and with new buildings constructed specifically to house it. Later, in celebration of Belgian centennial of independence celebration, in 1930 it underwent another renovation process, this time in celebration of centennial anniversary celebration. Now designated a protected landscape area, today its landscape includes many natural slopes as well as remnants from its old citadel.
Citadelpark offers visitors plenty to do and see, including numerous statues, monuments and buildings such as Feest- en Floralienpaleis, Museum voor Schone Kunsten (museum for fine arts), Stedelijk Museum Voor Actuele Kunst (Small museum of current art) (Kuipke), poortgebouw of former citadel; remnants of old Bastion 5, monument by Oswald de Kerchove de Denterghem featuring Flora and Putto and statues by Jules Lagae (Jule Lagae), Jacques de Lalaing (JJ) and Yvonne Serruys.)
Citadelpark is home to both the University of Ghent's plant garden and Ledeganck campus, as well as an open-air theater designed by architect Geo Bontinck in 1940. Flemish government and City of Ghent plans to construct the new Museumplein at Citadelpark's eastern corner as part of their larger public-private partnership called Gentspoort, including tramline 7 and an autotunnel of R40. The car-free area between Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst and Museum voor Schone Kunsten will allow full integration into Citadelpark for this latter museum.
