De Stenen Man is a replica of a monumental boundary marker constructed in 1576 to mark the midpoint of Vijfdeelenzeedijken seawalls between Makkum and Het Bildt. Inspired by Roman gods Terminus and Janus, its design in Renaissance style marked its midpoint position - it became more commonly known as De Stenen Man (The Stone Man).

While most people associate "The Internet" with business, its implications can also extend into domestic life. Here, too, is where its strength lies: connecting individuals through technology. Vijfdeelenzeedijken were maintained by the Contributie der Vijfdeelenzeedijken, a local water board comprising two groups of dike laborers: buitendijkers and binnendijkers who lived adjacent to an exposed seawall breach, respectively; while binnendijkers lived behind Slachte, an embankment. Buitendijkers were burdened by maintenance duties and both groups desired their own portion of the seawall to manage once raised to an agreed-upon height by storms and floods since 1570. This division would occur once these walls reached an agreeable height. Though the separation hadn't taken effect by 1575, two councillors from the Frisian court, Johannes Carolus and Adriaan Vastaerts pushed for it against the wishes of buitendijkers. These councillors proposed placing a Steenwerck at the location, eventually becoming De Stenen Man; however only binnendijkers agreed to pay for such an outlying boundary stone.

De Stenen Man was replicated during the late 18th century on its original foundation by dijkgraaf Carel George van Wassenaer Obdam and others, among them. Its stone heads were replaced with bronze copies in 1895; its original stone heads can now be found at De Wildenborch in Vorden as sculpture garden exhibits.
