The Outremeuse Park dates back to the 14th century, and has long been a beloved destination. It was established at the southern tip of Outremeuse island during the 19th century; three plans from 12 submitted were selected from these competition entries in 1857 for consideration, and Julien-Etienne Remont's design won over all three contenders, though elements from all three plans were used when creating it.
In 1863, the northern section of the park was given to the Royal Horticultural Society and Acclimatization to create a zoological garden and botanical garden; while its southern section remained open and became home for a velodrome on what is currently rose garden site. Hubert-Guillaume Blonden made further modifications in 1874 by replacing small buildings with open grassy spaces and trees.
In the 20th century, the park has hosted two international exhibitions: 1905 World's Fair to mark the 75th anniversary of Belgian independence; only one structure from this exhibition remains: Palace of Fine Arts housing Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MAMAC) and Cabinet of Prints and Drawings until 2011. A subsequent international exposition took place to mark 100 years since Belgium gained independence and focused on science and industry.
In the 21st century, the park has seen significant revitalization. Renovations at the Palace of Fine Arts to become the Museum of La Boverie are underway while construction began on Belle Liegeoise Footbridge that links it to Guillemins district. Unfortunately in November 2018 due to a fungus outbreak several century-old Canadian poplar trees had to be cut down; their replacement will occur with marsh oaks later.
