History of Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre
Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre is named after Saint Julian the Hospitalier. In the Middle Ages, the church was connected with a hospice that welcomed poor pilgrims. It is believed that the church's origins date to the beginning of 6th century. Saint Julien de Brioude and Saint Julien du Mans are both considered patrons, although it is not known which saint was the original patron.
The Vikings destroyed the original basilica in 886. A second church was then built and given to the Cluniac priory of Longpont-sur-Orge in 1125. In 1160, the monks from Longpont rebuilt the church and established a Priory. They also built the current church.
The choir, despite its small size, is a work of high-quality sculpture that was inspired by Notre-Dame Cathedral. It was likely created by the same artists. The priory prospered for many years. It hosted classes from the University of Paris as well as general assemblies and elections until 1525. The priory began to decline and the church was deteriorating. Despite a recovery attempt and a construction of a brand new facade in 1651 the Priory of Longpont was forced to give up its church and priory two years later to the Hotel-Dieu de Paris. The priory was no longer in existence, and the Church became a Chapel of the Hotel-Dieu. It was transformed into a warehouse during the French Revolution, which lasted until 1826. Then Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre became a chapel of the hospital again, with a very limited spiritual life, before closing in 1873. It was classed as a historic monument in 1846.
Finally, Father Alexis Katoub developed the project of a Greek-Melkite-Catholic parish in Paris and obtained that the church be made available to this new parish. In 1889, this was accomplished. The Eastern Catholics now had their own place in the capital to worship, and they celebrated Masses there in accordance with the St. John Chrysostom rite. In 1900, an iconostasis with a marquetry from Damascus was installed in the entrance of the apse to adapt the church for its new purpose. The church remains the center of the life of the Greek-Melkite-Catholic parish of Paris.
