De Heikant, a neighborhood of Tilburg North, was developed in the 1960s, around the communities Vlashof De Schans and De Lijnse Hoek. The neighborhood borders the Buitengebied Noordoost in the north, Quirijnstok in the east, Goirke-Kanaaldijk and Wilhelmina Canal in the south and Stokhasselt to the west.
Heikant used to be the northernmost driveway in Tilburg. It developed over time into an agricultural area, with farmland and meadows. Rugdijk was the main community, and De Schans is the triangular area. Heikant was originally located in a remote area compared to Tilburg. The majority of the population were farmers, craftsmen, and home weavers. The development of the parish began in the 19th century. In 1873, Mary's Church was built, along with a rectory and convent. These buildings have been classified as National Monuments. Heikant's village character was preserved until the end of the 20th century due to its isolation, reliance on local facilities and its 'unique community life'. In 1958, the Heikant was home to nearly a quarter (250) of Tilburg’s 300 farmers. Together with the Stokhasselt neighborhood and Quirijnstok, the Heikant forms the Nieuw-Noord District, which was constructed in the 1960s, to satisfy the housing demand of the baby boomers. Heikant has many apartment buildings and maisonettes.
From 1970 until July 24, 2009, the Heikant housed the Sportcentrum Drieburgt. This multi-functional sports centre offered facilities for both individuals and sports clubs. The complex was torn down in order to build a new sport center, Sportcomplex Drieburcht.
The Wagnerplein, located in the Heikant district, is its central point. The weekly market is held on this car-free area from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. The Sportcomplex Drieburcht also has a library, and is multi-functional. In 2018, the renovated and expanded Wagnerplein Shopping Center was completed. It offers a variety of shops including supermarkets, drugstores and clothing stores. Wagnerplein is Tilburg's only fully-fledged retail center. There are other shopping zones besides the Wagnerplein, such as the Lijnsheike or the intersection between Leharstraat en Offenbachstraat. In the Wagnerplein Shopping Center, Friday evenings are designated as shopping evenings and Sundays on the last day of the month are usually designated as shopping Sundays.
