The Moulagenmuseum, located in Zurich, is home to the largest collection of Moulages. These are lifelike representations of medical conditions. The museum was founded between 1918 and 1949 by Bruno Bloch. Its collection is a cultural treasure.
The history of the Moulagenmuseum has been interwoven with the dedication and hard work of those who have preserved and added to the collection. Lotte Volger created teaching aids in 1918, after she learned the art of moulage from Fritz Kolbow. Paul Clairmont sculpted surgical Moulages that depicted various medical conditions, including 500 by Adolf Fleischmann. Guido Miescher, Hans Storck and Bloch's successors developed the collection. Zurich-based Moulage artists traveled to India several times to try and capture the leprosy cases as well as other tropical skin disorders.
In the 1960s color slides were replaced with Moulages in the classroom. The Moulagenmuseum is a testament to Elsbeth Stöiber's actions in 1972, when she refused to follow the orders to melt the Moulages. The museum, which faced numerous threats until the late 1980s of being disbanded, has experienced a revival since 1990 when restoration work was started. The museum's fortunes were further improved when it was given permanent premises in a new building at Haldenbachstrasse. Surgical Moulages can only be found in Paris and Zurich today.
The collection of the Moulagenmuseum includes over 1800 Moulages. Most were produced locally. The museum displays approximately 600 Moulages. The collection includes not only dermatological conditions but also surgical cases, self- and animal experiments and even representations. The collection is now used as a teaching tool for students at University of Zurich.
