The park was opened in June 2005 with a celebration. Friedrich Traugott Wahlen played a key role in World War II, promoting Plan Wahlen and the cultivation war. The park is named after him. The initiative consisted of converting parks in the cities into agricultural land, which increased Switzerland's independence from 52% to 72%. The dipol landscape architect team from Basel, and artist and architect Christopher T. Hunziker of Zurich won an international design competition for the park. The winning project "RGB" represents the clear spatial arrangement of the park using the colors blue, green and red.

Traugott-Walden Park: Location and Features

The linear design of the park creates urban spaces that are characterized by an alternating element of fullness and emptyness. The park is divided into three parts: the tree area in red, the playing field in green and the promenade in blue. The tree area is a lovely avenue of 70 red-leaved beech trees, of different species. It evokes the feeling of a landscape park in England. The 7,500-square-meter playing field includes an 11 m diameter water basin and an impressive shade roof. It is a great place to cool off for visitors. The playing field is also enclosed by a double netted ball catch system that creates an interesting moire effect from different angles. A sculptural light mast illuminates the area to allow nighttime play.
