Applying for a second parking permit
In Amsterdam, you are eligible for a parking permit if your home does not have any parking spaces. It does not matter whether you have free or rented access to a parking space. For example, if you rent a house with the possibility of renting a parking space and you do not use this possibility, you are not entitled to a parking permit. Limited people are entitled to a second parking permit in Amsterdam. The number of permits you may apply for varies by area.
How many parking permits can I apply for as a resident?
The number of parking permits you can apply for varies between 0 and 2 throughout Amsterdam. If 2 permits are allowed, they can be in the name of 1 resident or 2 different residents. If you already have your own parking space, the number of parking spaces will be deducted from the total number of permits you can receive. Thus, you may no longer be entitled to a parking permit because there is already sufficient parking space.
If you would like to apply for a second parking permit at one address, but for a business, then slightly different rules apply. This blog is only about parking permits for residents.

Alternatives to a second parking permit Amsterdam
In some areas you are not entitled to a second parking permit or you have to wait a very long time for the second permit. But what can you do if you are not entitled to a permit? Can you then apply for a temporary parking permit? Usually not. If you are not entitled to a permit, you can fortunately rent a parking space for a longer period of time from a local resident or from a nearby business. This is certainly more expensive than a permit, but much cheaper than on-street prices.
Where to park while waiting for a second parking permit?
Once you have applied for the second parking permit, you probably have a period of time to cover. If you have to wait up to a year for your parking permit, but you still need to get rid of your car, you can continue to park on the street, however, this is fairly pricey. Furthermore, you can ask around in your circle if anyone happens to have an empty space. It is also possible to temporarily rent a parking space through the Mobypark platform.
It can save up to 60% in costs to temporarily rent a parking space through this platform compared to parking on the street. Because you are renting directly from others who otherwise have their parking spaces empty, you can enjoy advantageous prices. Even if you have to wait longer for the permit!
