The top 5 Amsterdam breweries you should really visit

20-11-2019

Heineken, who hasn’t heard about it? This well-known beer brand once started as a small family brewery in Amsterdam and has since become one of the largest beer brands in the world. But Amsterdam has many other nice beers you could try and lovely breweries that you should definitely visit.

In this blog you can read all about the best beer breweries in Amsterdam to make your citytrip complete. Because what is a citytrip without a nice and cold beer?

1. Brouwerij 't IJ

This list starts with the oldest existing brewery in Amsterdam: Brouwerij 't IJ. Brouwerij 't IJ has been brewing Amsterdam beers since 1985. You can taste a typical Zatte, Natte or IJwit at one of the two tasting rooms in Amsterdam.

The oldest tasting room, De Molen, is located in an old bath house underneath the largest windmill in Amsterdam. At this location the beer is brewed. You can take a look at the process through the large glass wall that separates the bar from the brewery. At this location, it is possible to take a guided tour on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. This tasting room is located in the middle of the beautiful Amsterdam Vondelpark. Enjoy your well-deserved IJ-beer on the cheerful, blue terrace as a break during your walk through the popular park.

2. Brouwerij Troost

The first beer of Brouwerij Troost was brewed in a former monastery in De Pijp in 2014. Since then the company has grown very fast. Meanwhile, Brouwerij Troost can call itself the largest independent brewery in Amsterdam.

The Troost beers can be tasted at three locations throughout Amsterdam: De Pijp, Westergas and Oud West. If you haven't tried these beers yet, it's certainly worthwhile to visit one of the tasting rooms. At Westergas you'll find yourself in a large but homely room where you can watch the brewing process through a big glass wall. If you feel more like going to a cosy spot, then Oud West is the bar for you. Finally, De Pijp is a perfect combination of both: cosy and with a view on the brewing process. In addition to drinking beer, you can also enjoy a delicious meal in all the brewpubs of Troost; from hamburgers to salads and from nachos to bitterballen. There is something for everyone.

4. Oedipus

The fourth brewery on this list, Oedipus, has its first physical location since 2015 after starting in 2009. In this Amsterdam Noord location, located in an industrial warehouse, you can enjoy one of the delicious Oedibrews every Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday while enjoying great live music. With beer names like Swingers, Thai Thai and Mannenliefde and plenty of cheerful colours, it is a recipe to be happy. Here you can enjoy the brewing process at the same time as drinking your beer at the bar. If you happen to be in the area on a Friday, you should definitely stop by for Fresh Beer Friday, where you can get your beer straight from the assembly line for just €3.00. It can't get any fresher!

4. Poesiat & Kater

Since 2017 Poesiat & Kater has started brewing their own special brews alongside the Van Vollenhoven beers. The official story of the Van Vollenhoven beers starts in 1733 with the opening of the brewery 'De Gekroonde Valk'. In 1791 the brewery was named after its new owner: Jan Messchert van Vollenhoven. This was the start of the famous Dutch Van Vollenhoven beers. After the closure of this brewery the popular beer was lost and Poesiat & Kater decided to revive the beers by adding it to their own assortiment. Nowadays, on the Polderweg in Amsterdam East, you can again enjoy this old beer or one of the other delicious brews every day on the huge terrace or inside. Whenever you feel unable to choose, you can order a pitcher and taste 6 different beers of this brewery. It is certainly a place worth a visit and a great place to take a break from your busy day in Amsterdam.

5. Gebrouwen door Vrouwen

In 2013, two sisters from Amsterdam started a new hobby at home: brewing beer. This got out of hand and resulted in the brand Gebrouwen door Vrouwen (Brewed by Women). Since March 2019 they can call themselves the proud owners of their first bar in Amsterdam Oud-West. The cozy interior provides a homely feeling which immediately makes you feel like playing Monopoly all night. If you're here, don't forget to order one of the many delicious snacks. These get a lot of praise from guests and are highly recommended! Don't feel like getting a new beer at the bar every time? Then just order a table-tap and enjoy your own barrel at the table together with your friends or colleagues. You can’t wish for a better evening, right?

Heineken Experience

To round off this blog nicely a little more information about the Heineken Experience can't be missed. The Heineken Experience is now a museum, but used to be the location of the very first Heineken brewery. You can follow a tour where you’ll learn about the brewing process, the partners and the origin of Heineken and finish with a nice cold (and free) beer. Not really comparable to the other cozy breweries on this list, but certainly worth a visit.
