The term "Kruiskamp" is thought to have come from "camp," an enclosed piece of pastureland. Some historians speculate that revenue generated from this land may have been used to fund participation in crusades, prompting inclusion of "kruis" (Dutch for "cross") as part of its name. De Kruiskamp was part of an expansive common meadow northeast of the city center during the 15th century which was shared and utilized collectively by townspeople outside its walls; due to drainage issues it lay undeveloped until sometime after 20th century development began.

Development and Transformation

De Kruiskamp was first planned as residential real estate construction started to materialize gradually beginning in 1919. Plans for De Kruiskamp's residential construction were realized during the 1920s and 30s while in 1950 there was another large-scale building initiative. De Kruiskamp streets have been named for notable figures from history such as explorers, navigators admirals or former mayors of Amersfoort.
