Located in the Mitte district of Berlin, the Luisenstadtischer Kirchpark is a serene and historic park nestled along Alten Jakobstrasse and Sebastianstrasse. Named after the Luisenstadt Church that once stood here until 1964, this park holds significant cultural and historical value.
The park's rich history dates back to the late 17th century when a simple wooden church, known as the Sebastiankirche, occupied the site. Over time, it was replaced by a stone church in the mid-18th century and expanded with the addition of a tower. When the Kopenicker neighborhood was renamed Luisenstadt in honor of Queen Luise, the wife of King Friedrich Wilhelm III, the church was also renamed the Luisenstadt Church. The park surrounding the church served as a cemetery, laying to rest notable figures such as Carl Gottlieb Svarez, a Prussian jurist and judicial reformer, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, a renowned German composer from the Bach family, and Christoph Friedrich Nicolai, a prominent German writer. In 1831, the cemetery was closed, and the grounds were transformed into a peaceful recreational space for local residents.
Tragically, during World War II, the church was destroyed in a bombing raid on February 3, 1945. Over 50 individuals seeking shelter in the church's cellar lost their lives. In the aftermath, when the Berlin Wall was constructed, the ruin was demolished as it was too close to the border strip.
Following German reunification, the Luisenstadt Association, or Burgerverein Luisenstadt e.V., spearheaded efforts to revitalize the park. Through a community survey, it was decided that the park should serve as a memorial to the church and the victims of the bombing, as well as honor Svarez, Bach, and Nicolai, whose graves were leveled during the demolition. Sculptor Nikolaus Bode was commissioned to create a monument that fulfilled these criteria, resulting in a striking stele. The stele, along with the church's foundations, were officially listed as cultural monuments by the Berlin State Monument Office in 2002. Park pathways were established in 2001, using hedges to recreate the outline of the former church. A year later, the park's renovation was completed through an apprenticeship project led by the City Department of Streets and Green Spaces.
