Doornakkers-Oost, a neighbourhood in Eindhoven (Netherlands), is located in the city. It is located east of the center of Eindhoven in the borough Tongelre. Doornakkers-Oost and Doornakkers-West are the two sections of the neighborhood. The President Steynstraat, and the Generaal Bothastraat, mark the border between them.
The first plan of the Doornakkers neighbourhood was created in the late 1930s. It was loosely based upon a design developed by urban planner J.L. de Casseres. The majority of development took place in the neighborhood after World War II. The neighborhood is divided into two main axes that run east-west. Paul Krugerlaan, Jan van Riebeecklaan and Sint Josephlaan form the northern axis. The neighborhood has evolved over time as it adapted to changing needs.
The presence of Austrian houses or "Oostenrijkse Wooningen" is one of the most unique characteristics of Doornakkers Oost. These houses were built in 1952, and are situated between the General Bothastraat and the Generaal Cronjestraat. These homes were built for high-ranking Philips officials, the multinational electronic company with its Eindhoven headquarters. In 1949, Philips and two Austrian firms signed a trade deal whereby 400 Austrian prefabricated houses were exchanged for electrical equipment and potatoes from Philips.
