They wanted to make the equipment useless to the German occupiers. Due to a shift in the wind direction, 16 bombs were not able to reach their intended target, and instead fell into the residential areas of Oude Amsterdamsebuurt. The result was 85 deaths, 43 severely injured people and 62 light wounded. More than 1,600 homes were damaged, 84 of which were irreparably destroyed.
