Haarlem is a charming Dutch town located just 20 minutes from Amsterdam. It has many vibrant and unique neighborhoods, all with their own history and character. Stationsbuurt is one of these neighborhoods, which can be found in the Oude Stad district of Haarlem Centrum.
Stationsbuurt gets its name from a train station built in the area around 1842. In 1908, the station was renovated and involved raising railway tracks. In the area, there was also a temporary station called Haarlem Bolwerk, which operated between 1881-1886. Stationsbuurt has many cafes, restaurants and shops.
Stationsbuurt was created as a result the 19th century expansion of Haarlem known as Nieuwstad. This was part of a bigger plan to create an inner ring of the city, similar to the one in Leiden. The plan called to create a new northside, bordered by a semi-circular defensive line with six bastions and surrounded by canals that followed the line the bastions. The plan increased the urban area of the city by approximately 50%. The north city wall, and its canal, were sacrificed in order to dig two large canals: the Nieuwe Gracht (Southern Nieuwstad) and the Achter Nieuwstad Gracht.
The Kruispoort (now the Janspoort) and the Janspoort (now the Nieuwpoort) gates were destroyed during the expansion and a new gate was constructed, the Kennemerpoort. The gate was built near the present Kennemerplein and the train station. The city incorporated parts of Kruisweg, Jansweg that were originally outside the wall. They were connected with the Kruisstraat, Jansstraat, and the Nieuwe Gracht by the Kruisbrug, and Jansbrug.
Six bastions were built in the neighborhood's north for the defense of the city. Landscape architect Jan David Zocher transformed the remnants of the bastions in the 19th century into the parks of De Bolwerken en Kenaupark. The Nieuwe Gracht is the only canal that remains in the area. It separates the newer part of the city from the older. The Achter Nieuwe Gracht and Kraaienhorstergracht have disappeared. Parklaan, which was built on the Achter NieuweGracht site, gives the neighborhood an atmosphere of greenery and parks. The Kraaienhorstergracht, which was an extension of the Oude Gracht, has become part of Nassaulaan.
Gonnetbuurt is located in the southeast corner, east of Jansweg. The Gonnetbuurt is a collection of villas located around Ripperdapark. It was once used as an industrial area, such as De Phoenix Cotton Factory in the 19th Century. The area was completely redeveloped in the 21st Century into a residential and commercial district.
