Maredorp (also spelled Marewijk) is a neighborhood in Leiden's Binnenstad noord district located on the northern bank of Oude Rijn and bordered by Oude Singel to its north, Herengracht to its east and Mare canal to its west. Its main street, Haarlemmerstraat, serves as both retail shopping street as well as its primary residential street - Haarlemmerstraat serves as the city's primary retail shopping street while often mentioned alongside De Camp (located on its opposite side of Mare Canal).
Maredorp dates back to when it was nothing more than a piece of Dutch meadowland divided by straight canals, when Leiden was still just a settlement on the south bank of the Oude Rijn river. People also settled across from it on either bank of river in an area now known as Leiderdorp. When Leiden expanded for safety purposes in 1346/1355, Maredorp became part of Leiden due to an expansion of city walls primarily built where current Oude Vest parcels of houses now resided.
Maredorp really began its development during the 15th century with the arrival of two secondary cloisters by Vollersgracht - then known as Donkere Gracht. After the Leids Ontzet in 1574, the city government acquired and demolished two cloisters; the Schagen or St. Catharinaklooster on what is now Runderplein and Abcoude or Sint Mariaklooster at one end of Vollersgracht. Schagen site served as a cattle market in 1578 while Abcoude site was designated as a raamland in 1579. Due to population growth, more land was set aside for housing construction while wool fulling businesses opened shop nearby; eventually though due to pollution of surface water this industry had to relocate due to stench issues and pollution issues.
