Vreewijk is a neighborhood located in Leiden's south side in Zuid-Holland in the Netherlands. The neighborhood is bordered by the railway line Leiden-Utrecht on its Western edge, Noordeinde on its northern boundary, the Witte Singel water on its eastern edge, Jan van Goyenkade river to its south and its Jan van Goyenkade water in its southern end. Established as part of Leiden outside its singels in 1881 Vreewijk was designated formally part of Bos-en Gasthuis district of Zuidelijke Schil and designated protected city view as part of Zuidelijke Schil in 2011.
Vreewijk is an 18th-century residential area located outside the historic city center. However, its strong connections to it remain; Witte Singel acts as its border. Vreewijk-complex bridges connect it with different university complexes as well as Vreewijkbrug. Additionally, Jan van Goyenkade serves as another boundary while being connected by Jan van Goyenbrug that only cyclists and pedestrians have access to.
