Construction of the cathedral proved arduous due to difficulties raised raising necessary funds for its completion. Work progressed over many decades under various generations of architects from 1856 until 1975 and was finally finished off in 1999 when an ultramodern facade was installed on it - although initial plans had included two large towers framing a rose window; these plans were ultimately abandoned.

Today, Cathedrale Notre-Dame-de-la-Treille serves as one of the region's premier religious and cultural landmarks and houses the Archbishop of Lille. Each year it attracts many visitors.
