The basilica lies between Roucas-Blanc and Vauban districts on an impressive limestone peak rising 149 meters above sea level, designated a historic monument by France in 1917. Built by Protestant architect Henri-Jacques Esperandieu in Romanesque-Byzantine style, the basilica was inaugurated on June 5, 1864 to replace a chapel that had first been established in 1214 before being rebuilt during the 15th century. The basilica comprises two sections, with its lower church or "crypt", carved into rock in Romanesque style, and above it a higher church with mosaic decorations in Romanesque-Byzantine style. At its summit is a square bell tower containing 41 meters tall bells topped by an 12.5 meter pedestal which supports an 11.2 meter statue of Virgin Mary and Child made out of gold-leafed copper leaves that stands 11.2 meters.
