Centre Bourse is a popular tourist attraction situated in Belsunce district of Marseille's 1st arrondissement and offers visitors an engaging shopping experience. Accessible via various routes - Rue Henri Barbusse, Rue de Bir-Hakeim, Cours Belsunce and Rue Neuve Saint Martin - it can also house the Marseille History Museum, Jardin des Vestiges archaeological site, World Trade Center Marseille Provence and Mercure Marseille Centre Vieux Port hotel are among its tenants.
The Centre Bourse is a historic site constructed on the former grounds of Quartier derriere la Bourse, which had been destroyed during early 20th century demolition. After that point it served as fair and circus sites, public gardens, military camps, fairgrounds and eventually parking lots. Following World War II as part of Marseille's reconstruction efforts after World War II it was intended that this project comprise residential buildings, an underground parking lot and shopping centre; four towers known as Labourdette Towers were completed but due to significant Greek and Roman archaeological findings during 1967 construction caused its suspension resulting in 1967 construction engulfing whole project before completion could even begin!
After much debate and media campaigns, a compromise was reached that allowed the project to move forward while protecting part of the archaeological site. In July 1971, the Bourse ZAC (Zone d'Amenagement Concerte) was established. As part of an overall plan to adapt the city centre for national and international functions following construction of Fos-sur-Mer industrial complex, a directional center was planned stretching from Palais de la Bourse to Porte d'Aix in order to adapt it for new functions in response to Fos-sur-Mer's development. Project details included construction of a shopping centre, parking lot, business centre, hotel, museum and library. Beginning construction in November 1973 and opening to the public in 1977 was its inaugural event; The Marseille History Museum and Jardin des Vestiges both had their grand opening ceremonies that year.
