A central feature of his design was to maintain the north-south perspective; cinematic walks reveal themed gardens serving as playgrounds or theaters where nature plays out onstage; straight galleries covered with wave-shaped roofs connect north and south while punctuated by red buildings known as "folies."

Villette Park was among the first cultural establishments in Paris to offer an interdisciplinary program. The park hosts numerous events throughout the year, such as concerts (jazz, world music, electronica, classical, contemporary pop, rock), contemporary circus performances, exhibitions, theater, dance performances and outdoor cinema screenings. Since June 2006, La Villette Park has hosted the Villette Sonique music festival while Jazz a la Villette (co-organized by La Villette and Philharmonie de Paris) has taken place every two years since 2002. Cinema en Plein Air, held annually since 1990 on a screen on Prairie du Triangle between Zenith of Paris and Grande Halle has shown films outdoors since 1990. Additionally, The SMMMILE-Vegan Pop Festival hosts events centered around vegan culture and music; its inaugural edition was held from September 16-18 2016, drawing 10,000 attendees into the park.
