The Chinagarten Zurich holds historical significance as it was presented as a gift from Kunming, Zurich's sister city in China. Kunming presented this gesture of thanks in recognition of Zurich's support in developing Kunming's water supply and sewerage systems. Construction took place between May and October 1993 under supervision of Zurich City Gardening Department with garden specialists from Kunming as well as Zurich providing expertise. Official opening took place during spring 1994 in presence of both former mayors of both cities Josef Estermann as former mayors participated; starting 2010 Grun Stadt Zurich is responsible for its maintenance and operation.
Garden situated on a rectangular plot enclosed by low walls features a central pond adorned with an island in the centre, several buildings such as Water Palace with lakeside terrace on southern shore of pond and several smaller ones as adornment. Visitors to the Palace can admire Chinese-style furniture and two monumental paintings, while gallery walkways extend in both directions to display over 500 landscape and still life paintings. Yunnan Province and Kunming as its capital have long been distinguished by the unique style of arches with semicircular arches carved above transoms that stand above transoms, culminating in a square pavilion at their northern gallery's end; on its western shore of the pond opposite their main entrance lies an artificial mountain massif which acts as a spirit wall. On an island off of the garden is a small round pavilion accessible via two bridges: zigzag from west and arched from east; this structure pays tribute to Daoist lore by recalling Daoist Island of Immortals. At its northeast corner lies an additional hexagonal pavilion with Phoenix motif embellishments which adds even further charm. Within the park can be found an assortment of plants, shrubs, rocks, stones, waterfalls and calligraphy - making for an engaging viewing experience. Their arrangement reflects not random but symbolic references from Chinese culture, with particular attention given to three winter friends of Chinese culture - bamboo, pine needles and winter cherry - while its location was chosen according to Chinese geomancy principles and placed between Zurichberg and Lake Zurich.
