The winning design of the park, which was awarded by Grun City Zurich through a competition in 2000, is "Quilt", a landscape architecture project by Kuhn und Truninger. The park was built in collaboration with Grego & Smolenicky Architektur and Pascal Wiedemann after ten months and opened on August 30th 2003.

The design concept of the park is based on incorporating existing features rather than adding more. The park is characterized by a patchwork of fields that blend seamlessly to create a cohesive whole. The tree field is a feature that stands out. It's paved in asphalt and decorated with Pterocarya bushes, and it extends the length of the park. Temporary retention basins are used to collect rainwater during heavy rainfall. This creates reflective surfaces. This design element is meant to draw attention to the groundwater levels in the area. They can reach up to 80 centimeters beneath the surface.

A gravel field, with willow trees, benches, and red gravel adjacent to Binzmuhlestrasse creates a unique atmosphere. The park is lit by 30 semi-spherical yellow lights, similar to those used as traffic dividers. The park has a lawn designed as a play area, with eight pyramid-shaped mounds that represent the inverted shape formerly located at the site. The blue Tartan sport field is enclosed by ball catching nets and offers a year-round surface for all-weather sports.

Louis-Hafliger-Park has a red play ribbon that is dotted with swings, slides and monkey bars. The synthetic surface of the park also houses climbing equipment. A wooden stage can be used for different events and activities.
