Bankras/Kostverloren is an area in Amstelveen's northeastern part, situated along Amsteldijk-Noord near Amsteldijk-North and near its bend in the Amstel river. This neighborhood's history can be traced back to 1540s when a castle called "Brillenburg" stood here near Amsteldijk-Noord near its bend - in later years this structure became known by artists like Rembrandt, Hobbema, and Ruisdael among others! Ultimately its current name "Kostverloren", meaning "lost costs". This location became worldwide known due to paintings from artists such as Rembrandt, Hobbema and Ruisdael artists!
In the 1950s, western parts of Middelpolder were designated for housing development with Bankras/Kostverloren expansion plan approved by city council. This planned garden city consisted of four connected residential areas featuring single-family homes along with mid-rise buildings and some high-rise apartments on its eastern end. Local roads were designed with many curves to slow traffic down; foot and bike paths were constructed; Middelpolder landscape was preserved on one side while two shopping centers, Kostverlorenhof and Bankrashof were constructed within this neighborhood.
