Park am Nordbahnhof, located in the Mitte district of Berlin, is a 5.5-hectare park situated between Gartenstrasse and Caroline-Michaelis-Strasse on the former site of Nordbahnhof. This park holds historical significance and offers a serene escape from the bustling city. If you're planning a visit to Park am Nordbahnhof, finding convenient parking nearby is essential to ensure a stress-free experience. That's where Mobypark comes in, providing affordable and hassle-free parking options in the vicinity.
History of Park am Nordbahnhof
The park's history dates back to 1842 when trains departing from the then Stettiner Bahnhof (now known as Nordbahnhof) traveled towards Stettin and Pomerania. Over the years, the station underwent expansions and renovations to accommodate the growing traffic. However, due to the station's unfavorable location for the Reichsbahn and significant war damages, it was closed in 1952. Following the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, the area became part of the border zone. Today, the park serves as a reminder of its past and contributes to the Berlin Wall memorial concept.
Planning and Realization of the Park
The development of Park am Nordbahnhof began with an urban and landscape planning competition in 1995. The project was realized by Grun Berlin GmbH and designed by Fugmann & Janotta, a Berlin-based landscape architecture firm. The park's completion, according to the winning design, took several years and opened on May 14, 2009. Further enhancements were made in 2019, with a total investment of approximately 1.6 million euros. The majority of the funding came from compensatory measures for various construction projects, with the Deutsche Bahn contributing about 65% of the total cost.
The Park's Features and Design
The park's distinctive feature is its location, three meters above street level, inherited from the former Nordbahnhof. The character of the park is shaped by the Klinkermauer (brick wall) on Gartenstrasse and the remnants of the former Hinterlandmauer (hinterland wall). Throughout the park, you can discover remnants of the railway facilities, such as the former signal box transformed into a townhouse and the Stettiner Tunnel. The park also incorporates elements of the former border area, including the Hinterlandmauer, the marked path of the Grenzmauer (border wall), and sections of the preserved patrol path of the border troops.
