The National Basilica of the Sacred Heart, a church with a Latin cross design, is a large and impressive building. It has a central nave measuring 141 meters in length and a transept measuring 107.80 metres wide. The dome is 33 meters in diameter and 89 meters high, making it one of the longest churches in the world. The exterior measures 164.5 meters in length, making it one of the world's largest Art Deco churches.
It is an excellent example of Art Deco Architecture that will amaze everyone who visits. King Leopold II, a Belgian, was inspired by the Sacre-Coeur basilica in Paris, and decided to build the church. To celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Belgian Independence, he decided to build an identical church in Brussels. The commission selected the Koekelberg plateau and chose Pierre Langerock's design for a neogothic church.
Construction of the Basilica began in 1905. In 1909, foundation work started. The project was unfortunately delayed by the death of King Leopold on December 17,1909. Construction of the Basilica was also delayed by the outbreak of World War I. After the war, however, Cardinal Mercier organised massive fundraising which restarted construction of the Basilica.
The original design was deemed outdated. Dom Sebastien Braun (monk, promoter of l’ecole d’art of the Maredsous Abbey) brought in Gent architect Albert Van huffel to create a new Art Deco design. The cost of construction was reduced by using a reinforced concrete skeleton. Paul Rome, an engineer-architect who finished the project after Van Huffel's demise, assisted him in its practical implementation. Paul Rome made some technical improvements to the dome and east towers.
The Basilica was officially inaugurated on October 13 and 14 1951 by Cardinal Van Roey. On January 28, 1952 Pope Pius XII conferred the title of Minor Basilica to the Basilica. Hambresin Enterprises was active at the site since 30 and began the completion of the dome in November 1967. The project was completed in stages, depending on financial resources, by Hambresin Enterprises. The tower crane, which was installed at 52.90 m height on the platform for the implementation and with a hook height of 100 m to lift the material to the top, was completed in several stages depending on the financial possibilities.
