It's a building made of metal framework structures located in Paris' Villette district. The building is located at the southern entrance to the Parc de la Villette at Place de la Fontaine-aux-Lions. It can be reached via Metro Line 5 from the Porte de Pantin Station.
The Grande Halle is now a place for exhibitions and cultural events since the Parc de La Villette was created on the former site of an abattoir. Since 1993, the Public Establishment of the Park and Grande Halle de la Villette is responsible for the management and cultural program of the Grande Halle. A decree dated 2 March 1979 designated the building as a historical monument.
The building, originally known as "halle aux bovins", was built between 1865-1867. It was the largest livestock market in the area and could accommodate up to 1,360 cows on the days of large markets, which were held every Monday and Thursday. This number grew to 5,000 animals over the years until it was closed on March 15, 1975. Two smaller halls were built around it and separated by wide avenues. They housed 3,900 sheep in the west and 1,950 calves, 3,240 pigs and 3,900 lambs in the east. The "halle aux vaaux" was destroyed by 1980 due to its poor state. Only the "halle des moutons" has been completely demolished in 1986. Its various framework components are still kept in the Affimet premises at Dammarie-les-Lys in Seine-et-Marne.
Since the creation of Parc de la Villette in 1983 by Bernard Reichen and Philippe Robert architects, the Grande Halle underwent two renovations, first between 1985 and 1983, then again between 2005-2007. The Magicians of the Earth Exhibition was held in 1989 at the Centre Georges-Pompidou and the Grande Halle. From November 11 to 13 2018, the Paris Peace Forum took place at the Grande Halle. The exhibition "Tutankhamun Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh", which ran from March 22 through September 22, 2019, attracted 1,423,170 people, making it the largest exhibition in France. It surpassed the exhibition of "Tutankhamun and His Times", which was held in the Grand Palais, Paris, in 1967.
The Grande Halle hosted a major "Napoleon", a bicentennial exhibition in 2021 to commemorate the death of Napoleon I. Over 150 paintings, statues and other objects were lent to the event by Napoleon funds, such as the Fondation Napoleon and the chateaux in Versailles, Fontainebleau and Malmaison as well as Musee de l'Armee.
