The Bomenbuurt neighborhood is located in The Hague's Segbroek district. The neighborhood was constructed between 1911-1923. It is bordered on the north by the Valkenboskwartier, Heesterbuurt and Vogelwijk neighborhoods. Haagse Beek runs along the northern border of the neighborhood.
The area was built over an ancient strandwal or beach dike that predated the Common Era. The Rijnweg was a Roman road that connected the Maas River and the Oude Rijn along this area. In 1100 CE new dunes formed behind the old dikes. They were roughly located between Laan van Meerdervoort en Hanenburglaan. The area was ideal for hunting but not for development. Only a few farms, painted by Hague School artists, were built in the area.
The 19th century saw the majority of new dunes being excavated, both to expand the city as well as use the sand in other places. In 1886, excavations were also carried out in the Bomenbuurt. The sand was transported by canals, such as the Valkenbosvaart. The building companies recognized the potential of this area and bought large tracts of land. They built, sold and rented homes. The Maatschappij laan van Meerdervoort was The Hague's largest company, with a Zoutmanstraat office.
