Vogelwijk is located in The Hague's Segbroek neighborhood, which is in the Dutch province South Holland. The neighborhood is bounded by the Houtrustweg to the northeast, Sportlaan to the southeast, De Savornin Lohmanlaan to the southwest and Westduinen, in the northwest. It is located near the Bomen- en Bloemenbuurt area, Bohemen- and Meer en Bos areas, Kijkduin- and Ockenburgh-areas, Duindorp- and Geuzen-areas, and Statenkwartier.
Vogelwijk developed in the Segbroekpolder between 1910 and 1961. The neighborhood, originally called Tuinwijk Houtrust (garden suburb), is one of The Hague's most popular residential areas. It features many high-quality apartment buildings and detached villas in brick architecture. A.J. built 86 houses around the Kwartellaan in 1927-1928. Kropholler also built churches and monasteries.
The neighborhood was evacuated in 1944 and sealed as part of Atlantikwall. Some streets were destroyed. There are duplexes in the postwar neighborhood that were supposed to be converted into single-family homes after the housing shortage was resolved. This never happened. The neighborhood was granted a protected municipal landscape status on February 14, 2002. Laan van Poot is a dune crossing that leads to the North Sea Beach. Since 1938, the Haag Atletiek has been located in Laan van Poot.
Houtrusthallen was a sports complex in Vogelwijk, built in 1937. Concerts were held there as well. The Houtrust sports centre's roof was in bad condition because of concrete rot. The Hague municipality did not have the money to do major maintenance. The complex was destroyed in 2002. Before the building was destroyed, many people said their goodbyes.
Tram line 7 was the first tram to reach the Sportlaan in 1922 via the 2nd Sweelinckstraat. In 1923 tram line 7 reached the Kwartellaan. In 1925, the second HTM city bus line, bus line 4 (2nd), came via Thomsonlaan, Goudsbloemlaan, Daal and Bergselaan and Duinlaan. This bus line was renamed line M in 1927 and bus 24 (1st) in 1955. Tram line 7 was extended from the beach to the tram in 1928.
