Lombok West is a neighbourhood located in Utrecht's West district, the capital city of the Dutch province Utrecht. The area is composed of three areas: Lombok West, Lombok East and Leidseweg. Lombok, a typical working class neighborhood, was constructed between 1886 and 20 as part of the Lombok project.
Lombok, administratively, is divided into Lombok East and Lombok West, which are separated by the J.P. Coenstraat. Lombok developed west of the Leidse Rijn, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The Kanaalstraat is the main street in the area. Street names and the neighborhood's name are all related to the islands, areas and VOC sailors of the former Dutch East Indies colony (current day Indonesia). Lombok is located on the border of Utrecht's station area.
Lombok is a place with a long history. Along the Vleutense Vaart, and the Leidse Rijn, several industries were established. There were a few mills and the "NV de Koninklijke Lood- en Zinkpletterijen voorheen A.D." Since 1866, the neighborhood has been known as "Hamburger". The neighborhood was built up for housing starting in 1886. The main streets were for office workers while the streets between were used to house factory workers. Around the orchards and industries, the first houses were constructed. The majority of industrial and agricultural structures, including the Bijgeval and Riouwstraat mills and water towers, were demolished. The Ster sawmill from 1739 is the only one that still exists, or has been rebuilt. The mill was built between 1996 and 1998, on top of the old sawmill. After soil remediation, the lead-smelter has been demolished.
Lombok is one of Utrecht's first multicultural neighbourhoods (apart of the very first boardinghouses in the center of the city). Lombok is a neighborhood with a long history, thanks to its established industries. The neighborhood also served as a link between the Kanaalstraat, Vleutense Vaart and later Vleutenseweg and the "hinterland", or the agricultural areas of De Meern en Vleuten. The social balance in the Kanaalstraat attracted many immigrant entrepreneurs. The neighborhood underwent a dramatic change in the 1970s and 80s as workers began to bring their families over. Kanaalstraat's appearance is still largely determined by Turkish shopkeepers.
Lombok, too, was on the list of cities to be renovated in the Netherlands during the 1980s. It was a working-class neighborhood that had been left in shambles. Lombok was heavily influenced by the city, which led to an influx in young families with children, changing the demographics of the area.
