Oog in Al, also known as West District of Utrecht is a neighborhood located in the Dutch province Utrecht's capital. The neighborhood is bordered by the Merwedekanaal to the north, the Halve Maan to the west, and the Leidse River to the south. In 2017, there were 4,280 residents in the neighborhood. It is a part of Oog, a sub-neighborhood in Al/Welgelegen that also includes Den Hommel and Welgelegen neighborhoods as well as Halve Maan.
A tree-lined road with three lanes - Pijperlaan Joseph Haydnlaan and Lessinglaan - borders the neighborhood to the west. This route is also known as PHL-laan. This lane is a part of the inner city ring road. There is a shopping mall for the basics, a library, five primary schools, including a Roman Catholic, Protestant Christian, Montessori, and Reformed school. Park Oog is located on the east side.
Oog-in-Al's history dates back to 12th century when it was part of the 'Trechter Weyde,' the city pasture in Utrecht. The Vletsloot divided the city pasture into two parts, the Hoge Weide and Lage Weide. The Hoge Weide was eventually renamed Oog in Al. The Oude Rijn Canal was dug in 1381 as a link between Utrecht, and Leiden. The canal connected the Leidseveer harbor and the Vleutense Vaart, now Vleutenseweg, to the Oude Rijn in Harmelen. The canal went through an old Rijn loop at the Oog-in-Al location.
In 1665, as part of an expansion plan that involved Mayor Moreelse a new section was created between Leidseveer en Oog in Al. Everard Meyster built the Oog estate in 1666 on the site where the new Leidse Rijn joined the Oude Rijn. To the west of Merwedekanaal, the split can still be seen today. Meyster supported Moreelse's plans for expansion and hoped to see the city expand from his estate. He named his estate "Oog in Al" because he wanted to have a view of the future city expansion.
The area surrounding the estate changed dramatically when the Merwedekanaal excavation was completed in 1892. In 1905 the Stichtsche Oil and Wafer Factory, which was later called Cereol, was built. Building homes around Oog, Al, was difficult due to the canal. It could only be traversed by a handful of lifting bridges. The municipality purchased the estate in 1918 for the purpose of expanding the city.
