Hogeweide, a neighborhood in Utrecht's Leidsche Rijn District, is located on the border of the Leidsche Rijn. It was historically a rural region that was within the limits of Utrecht. The area has a rich history, and it has seen many changes throughout the years.
In the past the area was called Trechter Weyde, and it was located north of Utrecht's medieval walled town. The land was originally owned by Utrecht citizens and used to graze their cattle. Three Utrecht chapters owned a part of Hoge Weide. The city eventually acquired the land, and began leasing it in order to generate revenue. In 1315, due to the financial problems of the city, the land had been divided into plots. It was then auctioned in public in 1433.
Hoge Weide was divided into two parts, the Lage Weide to the north and Hoge Weide to the south. Within the city limits, both formed separate rural jurisdictions. The boundary between the two jurisdictions was formed by the Vleutense Wetering/Vleutenseweg. Hoge Weide is bordered in the west by the old Rhine River course and in the south by the Leidse Rijn. The Hoge Weide is located on the ridge of Rhine River while the Lage Weide is made of peat with a clay layer on top. Around 1433, private farms began to be built on the Hoge and Lage Weide. In the Hoge Weide, a farm was developed into a country house called Leeuwenstein.
In the late 19th century the city boundaries were abolished and for a short time the Hoge Weide was a rural municipality. In time, Hoge Weide has lost its rural nature and is almost completely built up. In the 1850s, the city expanded into the Hoge Weide area including the Vinex district and the Lombok neighbourhood of Leidsche Rijn. The Merwedekanaal (later Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal) also crossed this area.
Hoge Weide is a name that has been revived today as a neighborhood. It also refers to the Hogeweidebrug, a street named Hogeweide and a park called De Hoge Weide.
