The Dutch municipality of Utrecht is located in the province with the same name. The neighborhood is split between De Meern, and Utrecht. The majority of Oudenrijn lies in De Meern, bordered to the north by the Leidse Rijn Canal, to the east by Strijkviertel, to the south by Heycopperkade, and to the west, Achtkantemolenvliet. This part of Oudenrijn is divided into Bedrijvengebied Oudenrijn, and the eastern half the residential area De Meern Zuid. The smaller part is located in Utrecht's Leidsche Rijn neighborhood and is bordered to the north by Leidse Rijn, to the east, south and west by the A12, Oudenrijn Junction, and A2 highways, as well as the Strijkviertel. This area comprises the Rijnvliet residential area, Sportpark Rijnvliet and Strijkviertelplas recreation area.
Oudenrijn had its own municipality from 1954 onwards. The eastern boundary of the municipality was initially close to the Merwedekanaal of the city of Utrecht. Utrecht was interested in building on the Kanaleneiland after World War II. At the time, this land was mostly located within Oudenrijn. In 1954, the eastern border of Oudenrijn was moved westward to the A2 highway. The remainder of Oudenrijn, which was too small to remain independent, was absorbed by the newly formed municipality Vleuten De Meern. Around 1,200 homes were constructed in the 1960s in this newly formed municipality. Over half of these houses were located in Oudenrijn. In the 1960s, hundreds of new homes were built behind the former town hall in Oudenrijn.
The Strijkviertel Road developed into an industry area in the 1950s. This area expanded quickly westward due to its proximity to highways A2 and A12. Strijkviertel, a quiet country lane about one kilometer from De Meern, was established in 1955. By 2000, industrial areas had nearly reached the developed area. The Meentpark is the only thing that separates De Meern Zuid's industrial area and residential area. De Meern and Haarzuilens are now part of Utrecht, replacing the former municipality of Vleuten De Meern. The industrial area Strijkviertel is now called Bedrijvengebied Odenrijn.
