De Meern is located in the western part, or municipality, of Utrecht. Vleuten and De Meern was the name of the municipality formed by the three neighborhoods De Meern Vleuten and Haarzuilens until 2001. De Meern Vleuten and Haarzuilens remained neighborhoods after the municipality of Vleuten-De Meern was added to Utrecht on January 1, 2001. They now form the Vleuten-De Meern District within the municipality Utrecht, together with the Rijnenburg polder located south of De Meern.
In the rural area that existed between the villages of Vleuten, De Meern, and the Amsterdam-Rijn Canal, the predominant land use was greenhouse cultivation, and there were also pastures. This area is now urbanized, and it will have a population over 95,000 by 2022, together with the densely populated residential areas of Vleuten, De Meern and other nearby villages. The reconstructed Roman fort Castellum Hoge Woerd in De Meern houses the permanently displayed Roman ship De Meern 1, and is one of the most prominent buildings.
De Meern lies northwest of the intersection with Oudenrijn. A majority of the developed area is located between the A12 canal and the Leidse Rijn, while a smaller portion is located north of Leidse Rijn. The Leidsche Rijn district borders the neighborhood on the north and east. It is also bordered to the south by the Achthoven and former Heicop polder, Harmelen, and Vleuten.
De Meern has several distinct neighborhoods. De Meern North (10.31) is located north of Leidse Rijn and includes De Woerd and Het Weer. Parkrand De Meern also includes the Zandweg, between the Gooisebrug en the Loobrug. De Meern South (10.32), located south of Leidse Rijn and west of Meentpark. It is north of A12 and east of Kloosterpark. Oudenrijn Business Area (10.33), located east of Langerakbrug and south of Leidse Rijn, east of Meentpark. Veldhuizen (10.24), located north of A12, south of Leidse Rijn and west of De Meern South. The Zandweg is located west of Loobrug, in Vleuterweide south (10.23).

De Meern North or Oudenrijn are accessible via the N198 if you exit the A2 in Utrecht Papendorp, or the A12 in De Meern.
