Rijnenburg is an area in the Dutch city of Utrecht. The area is situated immediately southwest of Oudenrijn, and the A12 and A2 form the northern and east boundaries. West of the area, the Meerndijk road and N228 from De Meern towards Gouda form the boundary. To the south, the municipality IJsselstein is located. The area was named after the old Castle Rijnenburg, located on the Nedereindseweg. The southern part, which includes the Nedereindseweg and the Nedereindseweg itself, belonged to the municipality Nieuwegein until 2000. Meanwhile, the northern part, including the Nedereindseweg was part the municipality Vleuten-De Meern. Since 2001, the two parts of this polder area have been combined into the Rijnenburg neighbourhood within the Utrecht district Vleuten-De Meern.
Rijnenburg's population has remained at around 250 people for many years. The majority of houses are situated on the Nedereindseweg which is a 6km long road divided in two. The 2 km east of the A2 Viaduct lies in Nieuwegein while the 4km west of it is in Rijnenburg. Ringkade, located directly west of the viaduct mentioned above, connects with the Nedereindseweg and leads to a small cluster houses in Heicopse, part of Rijnenburg. The Heycopperkade is also located in the north of the Heicopse Polder, close to the A12. In the Heicopse Polder, there are less than ten houses.
After 2020, the Vinex location Leidsche Rijn to the north of A12 is expected to be completed. Then Rijnenburg could be considered as a possible new city expansion for Utrecht. Rijnenburg will not have any new housing areas until 2028.
After the failed attempt at placing wind turbines in Lage Weide, Rijnenburg will also be home to a planned Wind Farm. The municipality of Utrecht decided to place at least 12 windmills in Rijnenburg, each measuring 235 meters high. RijneEnergie, a joint venture between energy provider Eneco and cooperative De Windvogel, will oversee the project. There has been some resistance from local residents. An action group called Buren van Rijnenburg collected 1500 signatures to oppose the placement of wind turbines. The project will proceed despite this opposition.
