Veldhuizen, a neighborhood of De Meern in the city Utrecht. Veldhuizen is the largest neighborhood in the municipality of Utrecht, with approximately 9,300 residents.
Veldhuizen lies in the west part of De Meern. Vleuterweide Zuid, De Meern Noord, and De Meern Zuid are the surrounding neighborhoods. These three neighbourhoods are in the municipality Utrecht. Veldhuizen is bordered by Harmelen in the west. Harmelen is a municipality of Woerden. The A12 motorway is located on the southern edge Veldhuizen. Reijerscop is located on the other side, part of De Meern Zuid. Veldhuizen is a name that comes from the old municipality Veldhuizen. This municipality was dissolved 1954. The municipality was made up of Meerndijk and the Veldhuizen-polder. The former Veldhuizen is now completely built up. The area west of Meerndijk has approximately 12,500 residents, with about 3,000 living directly west of Meerndijk at De Meern Zuid. Veldhuizen is a neighborhood to the west of the Kloosterpark with more than 3,000 houses, the majority of which were constructed between 1997 and 2003. Veldhuizen has three "sub-neighborhoods", Veldhuizen Noord Veldhuizen Zuid and De Balije. De Balije, the youngest of the three, is built in 2003.
Veldhuizen has many water and green areas that divide the neighborhood up into smaller units, each with its own name and character. These are listed on street signs below the street names. Veldhuizen Noord, in order of east to west, is divided into Polderland Waterland and Rijnland. In Polderland the street names all end with -polder. Waterland and Rijnland are two parts of the Netherlands that have streets named after rivers and waterways. Veldhuizen Zuid consists of Hoogland (the highest part) and Laagland (lower lying), where street names end with -berg. Eiland, in the southwest, has street names that end with -plaat, -plaatjes, or -plaat.
Veldhuizen can be reached easily via the A12 at the De Meern West Exit. Veldhuizen has frequent city buses that run to Utrecht, Vleuten and other cities. Some buses continue on to Kasteel de Haar from Vleuten. Veldhuizen is only 10 minutes away from Vleuten station. It takes about 20 minutes to get from Utrecht Central Station by bus. The buses stop at Meernbrug or De Meern Oost where you can transfer for other destinations like Montfoort and Gouda, as well as the university district De Uithof of Utrecht. Harmelen, Woerden and Veldhuizen are all connected by direct bus routes. This makes Veldhuizen a great place to live for people who like to be in a green and quiet area but also want easy access to the larger cities.
