Haarzuilens, a neighbourhood in the Dutch city Utrecht's northwest region, is located. It was part of Vleuten-De Meern until 2000. In 2001, it merged with Utrecht. Haarzuilens, part of Vleuten De Meern district, includes the area built up around the Brink & Castle of Haar as well as Thematerweg & the neighborhoods of Ockhuizen en Lage Haar. The Haarzuilens Brink can be found 10 kilometers from Utrecht's city center. The outer area is sparsely and extensively populated.
Haarzuilens' history dates back to 14th century when the castle of De Haar and its lordship were first mentioned. In 1812 the area was briefly part of Vleuten, but it became an independent municipality in 1818. The municipality was active until 1954 when it became a part of Vleuten-De Meern. This municipality and Haarzuilens were merged with Utrecht in 2001. Haarzuilens, despite the administrative changes has maintained its status as a place of official residence.
The Castle of Haar is the most famous attraction in Haarzuilens. The village used to be located nearer the castle. In 1898 the village, with the exception of the church ruin, was destroyed to make room for the new castle garden. The new village, which is located about 1 km to the east of the original one, was designed mainly by architect Pierre Cuypers who also was responsible for the rebuilding of the castle. Like the old village, the new village was also built as a brink. Construction activities around and in the castle have doubled the size.
The center of Haarzuilens is a relatively unchanged place since its reconstruction and relocation in 1898. Buildings around the Brink still exist. Between 1950 and 1970, there was only limited new construction that was mostly hidden from view. The Brink, and the immediate area around it, are protected by law as a villagescape. Haarzuilens is home to several national monuments, such as the Brink and castle.
