Vleuten-De Meern boasts an illustrious past. In 1811, its courts of Themaat, De Haar, Vleuten, De Meern, Ouden Rhijn, Heijcop, Papendorp Galecop Veldhuizen Reijerscop Kreuningen St Pieters were combined into four municipalities: Vleuten Oudenrijn Veldhuizen Haarzuilens On January 1, 1954, these municipalities merged to form Vleuten-De Meern municipality, and on January 1, 2001 Utrecht annexed this municipality. Vleuten-De Meern is designated as a Vinex location, an official label given to new housing developments across the Netherlands. Starting construction on Veldhuizen Subplan in 1997 - comprising approximately 3,000 houses to the west of De Meern's central hub - Vleuten-De Meern became part of Vinex and quickly established itself as an established municipality. After annexation, Vleuterweide became the biggest subplan in Vinex's location - consisting of around 6,000 homes to the south of Vleuten's old center - while De Woerd, featuring 500 properties for sale, was built up around De Meern. Haarzicht, a similar-sized plan was constructed near the northwest edge of Vleuten and should be completed in 2020. Furthermore, three housing projects were developed in De Meern; two have already been completed while one remains under development in 2020; these construction activities have resulted in an estimated population increase from around 20,000 in 2001 to over 50,000 by 2020.
