The history of Vleuten-De Meern goes back to 1811, when four municipalities were formed from the then courts Themaat, De Haar, Vleuten and De Meern, Ouden Rhijn, Heijcop, Papendorp, Galecop, Veldhuizen, Reijerscop-Kreuningen and Reijerscop-St.Pieters. Vleuten-De Meern, a municipality formed on January 1, 1954 from these (parts) municipalities. This municipality was annexed to Utrecht on January 1, 2001. Leidsche Rijn now includes the eastern part of this abolished municipality. This is roughly the area to the east of De Meern, Vleuten and the village of De Meern. The hamlet Nedereindseweg and adjacent meadows that belonged to Nieuwegein until 2001, were added to Vleuten-De Meern.
In 1997, the municipality of Vleuten-De Meern began building the Veldhuizen plan. This development plan included around 3,000 houses west of De Meern's center. Vleuterweide, the largest Vinex development plan, with 6,000 homes located south of Vleuten's old center, was built over a period of years after the annexation. De Woerd, a development plan in De Meern with 500 small owner-occupied houses was built between 2005 and 2008. The Haarzicht development plan, located on the northwestern edge of Vleuten's old village, is of a similar size. It is expected to be completed in 2020. Three small housing projects are being built in De Meern. Two were completed in 2017, and the third is currently under construction in 2020. The construction of all these projects has increased the population of Vleuten/De Meern from 20,000 in 2001 to 50,000 by 2020.
