Hoge Weide, a neighborhood of Utrecht's Leidsche Rijn, is located in this district. It was historically a rural region that fell under Utrecht's jurisdiction.
Trechter Weyde was the name of the area, and it was larger than any area inside the walls. The city meadow is one of the earliest cultivated areas in Utrecht's immediate surroundings. The land was initially owned jointly by city citizens, and used to raise livestock. Three Utrecht chapters owned a portion of Hoge Weide. Ownership rights for the city meadow were later transferred to the city. The city leased out the land in order to generate revenue. The city meadow, divided into parcels around 1315 due to financial problems, was auctioned publicly in 1433.
The city meadow was divided into two sections: the Hoge Weide in the south and the Lage Weide in the north. The two formed separate jurisdictions within the city (a region where local law was well-known, but the city exercised great influence in and implemented higher law). Vleutense Weg / Vleutensewetering formed the boundary between these two authorities. To the west, an old Rhine River course would border the Hoge Weide, while to the south the Leidse Rijn formed the boundary. Hoge Weide is located on the river terrace where the Rhine River used to flow. The Lage Weide was a peatland with a clay layer on top. Around 1433, private farms began to be built in the Lage Weide and Hoge Weide. The country estate Leeuwenstein was built on a farm in Hoge Weide.
The city jurisdiction was abolished in the early 19th Century, and the Hoge Weide became a rural municipality. This lasted for a few short years. The Hoge Weide gradually lost its rural character, until today it is almost completely built up. During this period, the city expanded in the former Hoge Weide. This included the Lombok district and the Vinex district Leidsche Rijn. This area would be crossed by the Merwedekanaal, later known as the Amsterdam-Rijn Canal.
The name Leidsche Rijn centre is now used as a name for a neighborhood. Hogeweide is a street, as well as the Hogeweide Bridge and De Hoge Weide Park. The Mobypark Parking Lot is located here, and offers residents and visitors of this neighborhood affordable and convenient parking.
