Rivierenwijk, also known as Rivierenwijk in Dutch, is a neighborhood located in Utrecht's Zuidwest district. Located along the Balijelaan, Vondellaan, Vaartsche Rijn, and the Merwedekanaal, the neighborhood is bordered by the Dichterswijk, Kanaleneiland/Transwijk, Tolsteeg, and Hoograven.
History of the neighborhood dates back to 19th-century, when along the Vaartsche Rijn only workers' housing and factories were constructed. The neighborhood was redeveloped after World War I with the help of the housing associations and the city. The Rijnlaan has been called the unofficial center of the neighborhood. The neighborhood is diverse with worker housing mixed in with homes designed to look like a garden village.
The University of Utrecht constructed various laboratories on the north side of this neighborhood. Other educational institutions set up shop there as well. In the 1990s most of these structures were demolished, and they were replaced by new houses and school buildings for institutions like the Grafisch Lyceum Utrecht or the ROC Midden Nederland.
The former Nieuw Apostolische Kerk in Berkelstraat was transformed into student housing by 2008. The building has been given the dual designation "Maatschappelijke doeleinden", (community uses), and "Wonen", (living), in case it will be used in the future for community purposes. Residents of the building call it "Club Kurk", referring to its former use as a chapel. The Sint-Gertrudiskerk is another notable building. It is a Catholic Church that was built in the year 1924. Today, it is a monument. The church has been closed since April 2018 due to low attendance and insufficient fire safety.
The neighborhood expanded in recent years to include three new roads: Pieter Bernagiestraat and Reyer Anslostraat. These streets were built at the former University of Utrecht's laboratories. The Utrecht Vaartsche Rijn Station (opened in 2016), which is located on the north side, was also constructed.
Rivierenwijk is home to several schools, including the Basisschool De Wereldwijzer, Gertrudisschool, Grafisch Lyceum Utrecht, OBS Maaspleinschool, ROC Midden Nederland, and X11. De Rivierwijker is the neighborhood's own news bulletin.
