Lunetten-Noord, a neighborhood of Utrecht located at the southeast corner and separated by the Waterlinieweg from the rest the city. Lunetten, in the municipal division of Utrecht, is a "sub-neighborhood" of the Zuid neighbourhood (which includes Hoograven and Tolsteeg), further divided into Lunetten Noord and Lunetten Zuid. This was a unique input for a residential district, as it included all scales; the urban and landscape elements, the facades but also the layouts of the houses and the courtyards. This is why the residential area is more successful than rigid "cabbage neighborhoods" and is an argument against contemporary urban design. The Beatrixpark lunettes, semi-circular defensive structures surrounded by water, are the inspiration for the name of this neighborhood. The lunettes at the Houtense Vlakte are part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Lunetten was also the route of the Limes, which was the northern border road for the Roman Empire. The two largest Dutch monuments meet in southwest Lunetten.

Long before the construction of the Hollandse Waterlinie, the defensive works around the lunette have had a significant influence on the design of the area. In order to keep the forts out of the line of fire, the Kringenwet from 1853 stipulated only that limited building work could be done in the circles surrounding the defensive works. It was a rule that no buildings were allowed, or that only wooden structures could be removed quickly in case of war. The Kringenwet wasn't revoked until 1963, but plans were already in place to expand Utrecht into the lunette area.
