Sterrenwijk is an eastern neighborhood located in Utrecht, the Dutch province capital. It is bordered by the railway to's-Hertogenbosch, Kromme Rijn and several surrounding neighborhoods such as Watervogelbuurt, Abstede Rubenslaan Tolsteegsingel. Sterrenwijk is sometimes mistakenly seen as half of Oost district due to Tolsteegsingel being considered its "singel", Watervogelbuurt being seen as southern extension and Lodewijk Napoleonplantsoen within which its surroundings.
Many streets in this neighborhood bear names derived from planets, such as Marsstraat, Poolsterhof, Neptunusstraat, Orionstraat, Pegasushof, Eclipshof, Mercuriushof Zenithstraat Jupiterstraat Keerkringplein Meteoorhof Equatorplein Saturnusstraat Meridiaanstraat and Komeetstraat. Sterrenwijk was initially established on Abstederdijk during the early 20th century with emergency housing projects designed for only 25-year lifespan with very poor construction quality as living standards in comparison with modern standards today.
Sterrenwijk has long had a poor reputation. Prior to the demolition of housing project homes, its condition was extremely dismal; since then however, a network of courtyards and streets has been established there; its poor standing has persisted ever since; unemployment and crime levels stand out well above average for Oost districts like Abstede and Lodewijk Napoleonplantsoen compared to others like Ondiep, Lombok or Wijk C for instance. Sterrenwijk remains one of Utrecht's oldest working-class neighborhoods; even today it remains one of Utrecht's most well-known working-class districts like Abstede Lodewijk Napoleonplantsoen stands out far above average when it comes to unemployment and crime levels; crime has historically outshown average on every account for Oost. Since its inception since its formation it has long housed poorer residents that reside here since its creation as one working-class neighborhood that housed poorer residents that lives there as an area that houses them; its inhabitants make its name well known, alongside Ondiep Lombok and Wijk C.
Demographically, Sterrenwijk can be described like this: 1997 saw 54% low income residents, 5% high income residents and 36% inactive individuals; 1999 had 488 low-income residents ranked as inactive with only 6% high-income residing at home and 24% inactivity levels while 2004 witnessed 50% of its residents belonging to low-income brackets with only 7% high-income residents and 29% inactivity rates.
