Geuzenveld, a neighborhood in Amsterdam's Westelijke Tuinsteden district, is located in the Netherlands. Geuzenveld is bounded by the Haarlemmerweg in the north, Sportpark Ookmeer in the south, Eendrachtspark, Geuzeneiland, and polder De Eendracht, to the east. The neighborhood was built in the late 1950s and is a mixture of low-rise and multi-level buildings, as well as high-rise buildings. The neighborhood expanded in the 1990s with the addition the De Eendracht neighbourhood on part of Sportpark De Eendracht.
The name Geuzenveld is derived from a farmstead of the same name located along the Haarlemmerweg. Local legend claims that the Geuzen or Dutch rebels used the farmstead during the siege on Haarlem, 1573. A farmstead was constructed on the site in the 17th century and the name remained until 1950 when the land cleared to build the neighborhood.
Geuzenveld, built between 1953-1959 in six neighborhoods designed by different architects and managed by different housing associations. Each neighborhood had its own elementary school - both public and Catholic - and was measured by the number households that it could house, usually 700 to 800. There are still a number of schools, including two public H-schools of the Amsterdam type. Nine schools were built altogether.
Around the Lambertus Zijlplein, the neighborhood is distinguished by the contrast between the low-rise areas on the edge and the multi-leveled and gallery-styled homes in the middle. Jaap Bakmema, Bernard Bijvoet and Ben Merkelbach were all followers of functionalist architecture. Willem van Tijen was also a follower. Willem Marinus Dudok was an exception, as his designs were often considered frivolous by functionalists.
Theodorus Johannes Lammers also built 100 homes for families that were "conditionally-social" and under the supervision of housing supervisors. Residents called the small neighborhood "Lammersbuurt".
