The Northern Quarter (commonly referred to as Quartier Nord or Noordruimte in Belgium) is the central business district of Brussels, Belgium. Situated between Willebroek Quay, railway lines of Brussels-North railway station, and the northern side of the Small Ring, it serves the municipalities of Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, Schaerbeek, and City of Brussels and boasting half of Belgium's twenty tallest buildings most exceeding 100 meters in height - most are in this neighborhood occupied by around 40,000 workers as well as residents (around 180,000m2 in total).
The Northern Quarter boasts a long and distinguished history dating back to the mid-19th century when the area first experienced heavy industrialization due to the construction of Allee Verte/Groendreef railway station and industries along the Brussels-Charleroi Canal. Workers came from all parts of Belgium and France; later workers also came from Southern Europe, Eastern Europe, and Africa. By 1960s however, its destruction by way of an extensive expropriation campaign known as The Manhattan Project caused widespread debate while also leading to urban void.
